Private guided tours from Almaty, Southeast Kazakhstan

From overnight canyon camps beside the Charyn River to guided hikes at Kolsai Lakes and private day trips to Kaindy Lake and Altyn-Emel — each experience is designed for small groups and solo travelers who want more than a group bus tour.

Temirlik Canyon Overnight — Private Camping Tour from Almaty

Temirlik is the canyon I return to again and again. It's quieter than Charyn, richer in wildlife, and offers a level of peace you can't find in the more visited parts of the region. This is where I take travelers who want to feel the land, not just see it.

We begin with an optional walk through Charyn's Valley of Castles, then continue into the deeper, more remote Temirlik canyon. Our private campsite sits right beside the river — accessible, calm, and perfect for watching the canyon shift through the day.

As evening settles, we cook a hot meal together over the fire and share stories under the open sky. At night, Temirlik becomes a different world: silent, star-filled, and completely free of crowds or light pollution. It's one of the most meaningful experiences I offer.

Every experience starts with pickup from your location in or around Almaty. All transport is in my own 4×4 — capable on any terrain and fully loaded with camping gear, cooking equipment, and everything needed for the journey.

Canyons to Kaindy — Private 2-Day Tour with Saty Village Overnight

Two days covering the best of Southeast Kazakhstan. An optional stop at Charyn Canyon, then a hike through Temirlik Canyon from the Overlook Point to the river confluence, followed by Kaindy Lake and an overnight in Saty village with homecooked dinner. Day two is yours — Saty Gorge, river walk, or Kolsai Lake's quiet far side.

Kolsai Lakes Hike — Guided Day Trip from Almaty

The three Kolsai Lakes — the Pearls of the Tian Shan — each tucked deeper into the Kazakhstan mountains near the Kyrgyzstan border. Unlike most day tours from Almaty that only visit the crowded Kolsai 1 shore, we hike toward the far quieter Kolsai 2: approximately 15 km round-trip, 600m elevation gain, through dramatic earthquake-reshaped terrain. For strong hikers starting early, we can continue all the way to Kolsai 3. A full day of real mountain hiking with a private guide.

Duration Full day
Difficulty Moderate – Challenging
From $400 USD for 2 people
Each additional person +$100
✓ Light snacks at the middle lake included
✓ Pickup from your location in or around Almaty

Altyn-Emel National Park — Singing Dune & Besshatyr Day Tour

A private day trip to two of Kazakhstan's most iconic sites in Altyn-Emel National Park. We begin at Besshatyr — ancient Saka burial mounds more than 2,500 years old — then climb the famous Singing Dune, a towering sand ridge that hums in the wind with views across the Ili River valley. One of the best day trips from Almaty for travelers interested in both natural landscapes and Kazakhstan's deep history. I also offer sandboarding down the dune — a fun way to descend that leaves no impact on the environment, since the wind reshapes the dune daily — and you'll still be back in Almaty by evening.

Duration Full day
Difficulty Moderate
From $400 USD for 2 people
Each additional person +$100
✓ Lunch at the Singing Dune included
✓ Pickup from your location in or around Almaty

Bayan-Zhurek — 3-Day Archaeological Expedition & Camping

A three-day private expedition deep into the Jungar Alatau foothills — one of Kazakhstan's most overlooked archaeological landscapes. Camp on the bank of a mountain river beneath open skies, explore a petroglyphs gorge with over 3000 ancient carvings, and stand at a 1000 BC Scythian observatory believed to track celestial bodies. On the way back, we visit the dramatic Burkhan-Bulak waterfall — one of Kazakhstan's tallest. The valley is almost entirely off-grid, which makes this as much a digital detox as an expedition. For travelers who want depth over comfort, and who measure trips by what they remember.

Duration 3 days / 2 nights
Difficulty Moderate
From $700 USD per person
Minimum 2 people ($1,400 total)
✓ All meals included · camp setup · firewood
✓ Pickup from your location in or around Almaty

Custom Private Tours from Almaty — Built Around You

Some travelers want something personal and unhurried — a day built around their interests rather than a fixed itinerary. Others want access to places that simply aren't packaged: the former Soviet nuclear test site near Semey, the Botai Settlement where horses were first domesticated, the ancient Silk Road ruins of Otrar and Sauran, or one of the largest open pit mines in the world at Ekibastuz. Both are the kind of request I get. Both are the kind I can deliver.

If you have a destination in mind — unusual or otherwise — tell me about it. I was born in Kazakhstan, lived internationally for over twenty years, and came home with the connections, the language, and the local knowledge to build a trip around almost anything.
