Canyons to Kaindy — Private Tour with Saty Village Overnight

From $500 USD for 2 people Moderate Max 4 people Pickup from Almaty

About This Journey

Two days that cover more of Southeast Kazakhstan than most visitors see in a week. We drive out of Almaty into the steppe, optionally stop at Charyn Canyon along the way, then head into the dramatic Temirlik Canyon system — the centerpiece of this expedition — before reaching Kaindy Lake and ending the evening around a homecooked dinner in a mountain village. The next morning, you choose your own pace.

Charyn is on the route and we can stop there if you'd like — the famous Valley of Castles is iconic and worth seeing — but it's also the most-visited canyon in the country, often crowded, and it's not what makes this trip special. Temirlik is. So we treat Charyn as optional: if you want to see it, we make the stop; if you'd rather save your energy and time for the quieter, wilder Temirlik, we drive on.

The Temirlik Canyon section is where this trip earns its name. We start at the Overlook Point, where the canyon opens up ahead of you in layers of red and ochre rock, then hike down to the canyon floor where the Temirlik river (a Charyn tributary) meets the Charyn itself at a dramatic confluence point. It's about 4km roundtrip with a real descent into the canyon and the climb back out — the kind of hike that feels earned. Kaindy Lake is the afternoon reward: the submerged spruce forest rising from turquoise water in a scene that doesn't look quite real. From the parking, it's about 4km roundtrip to the lake — on foot, or on horseback (local horses available from the trailhead for an additional fee).

In the evening, we arrive in Saty — a small mountain village at the edge of the Tian Shan. Dinner is homecooked and traditional, either at the guesthouse or with a local family depending on the evening. Either way, it's not a restaurant.

Day two is yours to choose, and distances are flexible depending on the option you pick and how active you want to be. We can hike to the far side of Kolsai Lake 1, walk through Saty Gorge, or take a gentler riverside walk through Saty village itself. You decide based on how your legs feel and what kind of morning you want.

Itinerary

Day 1

Canyons, Lake & Saty Village

  • Early morning Pickup from your hotel or apartment in Almaty. Private 4×4, door to door.
  • En route — optional Charyn Canyon — Valley of Castles. An optional stop on the way. The classic canyon view, dramatic red sandstone formations, worth 45-60 minutes if you haven't been. (Optional — your choice)
  • Mid-morning Temirlik Canyon — Overlook Point. We begin at the rim, where the full scale of the canyon opens ahead of you. Time to absorb it, photograph it, and prepare for the descent.
  • Late morning Hike to the River Confluence. We hike down from the Overlook to the canyon floor — about 4km roundtrip with a real descent into the canyon and the climb back out. The trail follows the Temirlik river (a Charyn tributary) down to the dramatic confluence point where it meets the Charyn itself. The descent and return are the most demanding parts of the trip; the views are dramatic the whole way down.
  • Lunch Vegetarian lunch at the Overlook. A proper lunch break at the rim before we continue — packed vegetarian meal with mountain views.
  • Afternoon Kaindy Lake — the submerged forest. Drive to Kaindy and hike in — about 4km roundtrip from the parking. The dead spruce trees rising from the turquoise water are as extraordinary as the photos suggest — more so, because of the silence. Horseback rides are available from the trailhead at approximately $20 USD roundtrip, paid directly to the local provider. (Optional add-on)
  • Evening Drive to Saty village. Check into the guesthouse. Dinner — homecooked horsemeat beshbarmak for meat eaters, or a vegetarian alternative (salad and grains) — served at the guesthouse or at a local family's home depending on the evening. Traditional, unhurried, genuine.
  • Night Overnight at Saty guesthouse. Shared room for two, shared bathroom and shower. Private room upgrade available on request for an additional fee.
Day 2

Your Morning — Three Equally Beautiful Choices

  • Morning Breakfast at the guesthouse. Then it's your call. Each of the three options below is genuinely worthwhile in its own way — none is the "main" or "default" choice. Pick what matches your mood, your energy, and your interests. Distances are flexible: each option can be done as a short walk or extended into a longer hike depending on how active you want to be.

Option 1

Kolsai Lake 1 — Far Side Hike

Drive to Kolsai Lake 1 and hike around to the far side — away from the tourist entry points, to where the lake is still and quiet. The best view most visitors never reach.

Option 2

Saty Gorge Drive & Hike

Drive into the Saty gorge for sweeping mountain vistas and a hike through dramatic alpine terrain. Quieter than the main sites, beautiful in its own right.

Option 3

Saty River Walk

A slower, more contemplative morning. Walk along the Saty River through the village landscape — meadows, willows, mountain views. Ideal if you want to ease into the day.

  • Late morning / midday Begin the drive back to Almaty. Scenic route through the steppe.
  • Approx. 6:00 PM Arrive back in Almaty.
