About This Journey
This is the journey that defined Arna Jol. While Charyn Canyon draws the crowds, Temirlik — its quieter, deeper sister — is where the real magic lives. A narrow river canyon carved over millennia, with riverside groves, dramatic rock formations, and a silence that's almost startling after the noise of Almaty.
The day begins early with pickup in a private 4×4 from your location in Almaty. You can choose to stop at Charyn Canyon's iconic Valley of Castles on the way — many guests appreciate seeing the famous landmark before continuing into the wilder, more remote Temirlik gorge. We then drive to the Overlook Point, where the canyon opens up below us. From there it's a hike of about 1km with ~150m of elevation change down to the riverside campsite — a hidden spot few visitors ever reach. The seclusion is the reason it's so peaceful, but it does mean this isn't a drive-up campsite. The descent and the ascent back to the vehicle the next day are the most physically demanding parts of the trip.
Once at camp, we set up dual-occupancy tents on the Temirlik river bank under shade trees, with the sound of the river flowing past. (If you'd prefer separate tents, just let us know when you book — we can accommodate single occupancy free of charge with advance notice.) The afternoon is yours to explore the immediate canyon, walk along the river, or simply rest. As the light softens, dinner is cooked over open fire — a proper camp meal, eaten slowly as the canyon walls turn gold then violet.
After dark comes the part that surprises most guests: the stars. Temirlik is far enough from any town that the Milky Way is genuinely visible — not as a faint smudge, but as an arc across the sky. Most guests stay up later than they planned.
The next morning, after a slow breakfast at camp, we hike from the riverside down to the confluence where the Temirlik river meets the larger Charyn — the geological reason this canyon exists. Then back to camp, pack up, ascend to the vehicle at the Overlook, and the drive home arrives in Almaty by early evening.
Itinerary
Drive, Camp Setup & Fireside Evening
- Morning Pickup from your hotel or apartment in Almaty. Private 4×4, door to door.
- En route — optional Charyn Canyon — Valley of Castles. Many guests like to stop at the famous landmark on the way. Roughly 45-60 minutes if you'd like to see it. (Optional — your choice)
- Midday Drive to the Overlook & descend to camp. The road narrows, the landscape opens up, and we reach the Overlook Point where we leave the vehicle. From here it's a 1km hike with ~150m of elevation change down to the campsite on the river bank. The descent is the most physically demanding part of the trip — but it's why the campsite stays so peaceful and uncrowded.
- Early afternoon Set up camp. Dual-occupancy tents pitched on the river bank under shade trees. (Single occupancy available free of charge with advance notice.) Communal dining area arranged. Everyone helps — it's part of the experience.
- Afternoon Explore the immediate canyon. Walk along the river, photograph the rock formations, find a quiet spot to read. The pace is yours.
- Evening Dinner cooked over open fire. A proper camp meal — vegetarian or with meat, depending on your preference. Eaten slowly as the canyon turns gold.
- Night Stargazing. Far from any town, the Milky Way is clearly visible. Most guests stay up later than they planned.
Confluence Hike & Return to Almaty
- Morning Slow breakfast at camp. Coffee, simple food, no rush.
- Late morning Hike to the river confluence. From camp we hike along the river to the point where the Temirlik meets the larger Charyn — the geological junction that carved this whole canyon system. Dramatic the whole way.
- Midday Return to camp. Pack up. Last quiet moments by the river. Then ascend back to the vehicle at the Overlook (~1km, ~150m elevation gain) — the hardest physical section of the trip but a strong finish to the camping experience.
- Afternoon Drive back toward Almaty through the steppe.
- Early evening Arrive back in Almaty.
