About This Journey
This is not a tour. It's a private three-day archaeological expedition into one of Kazakhstan's most overlooked regions — the Bayan-Zhurek valley, deep in the foothills of the Jungar Alatau range.
You'll camp on the bank of a mountain river, eat meals cooked over open fire, and sleep under skies that haven't seen light pollution in centuries. Each day brings something different — a petroglyphs gorge with over 3000 ancient carvings, a 100-meter Scythian observatory from 1000 BC believed to track celestial bodies, traditional summer pastures (jaylyau) where shepherds still live the way their ancestors did, and a remote waterfall most travelers never reach.
This is for travelers who want to go beyond the obvious. Charyn Canyon is beautiful but crowded. Kolsai Lakes are stunning but scheduled. Bayan-Zhurek is something else — an immersive experience in a landscape that hasn't been packaged for tourism. You'll participate in camp life. You'll cook together. You'll watch the sunset paint a 3000-year-old monument in golden light. You'll come back changed.
Maximum 4 people. Real camping (dual occupancy tents, communal dining tent, designated outdoor toilet area). The campsite sits right on the bank of a mountain river — cold, shallow, and crystal-clear, fed by snowmelt from the Jungar Alatau. Bathing in it is exhilarating, especially after a hike or in the heat of the afternoon. Highly recommended at least once during your stay. For travelers who measure trips by what they remember, not what they post.
The Mobile Detox
The Bayan-Zhurek valley has almost no cellular reception. There are a few spots where you can get a signal, but they require a minimum 20-minute hike from camp. This isn't a flaw — it's a feature. For three days, you're genuinely off-grid. No notifications, no email, no scrolling. Just you, the landscape, and the people you're with. If you need to make an urgent call, we'll show you where to get signal. Otherwise, leave the phone in the tent and let the world go quiet.
Itinerary
Arrival, Observatory & Camp Setup
- 5:00 AM Pickup from your hotel or apartment in Almaty. Private 4×4, door to door.
- Mid-morning Stop in Taldykorgan for lunch — your last glimpse of civilization. Real coffee, comfortable bathrooms, simple but excellent local restaurants. Recharge here, because from this point on it's wilderness.
- Afternoon Visit the Scythian observatory en route to camp. A 100-meter circular monument built around 1000 BC, believed to have tracked celestial bodies. It's directly on our path into the valley, so we stop here while the afternoon light is at its best — golden hour on ancient stones, with the Jungar Alatau as backdrop.
- Late afternoon Arrive at the camp location on the bank of a mountain river in the Bayan-Zhurek valley. Set up camp together — everyone helps. It's part of the experience. The river runs right past the campsite: cold, shallow, and crystal-clear, fed by snowmelt high above. A quick dip after a long drive is the kind of thing you'll remember years later.
- Evening Dinner around the campfire. Conversation, stories, food cooked over open flame.
- Night Stargazing — zero light pollution. The Milky Way is brighter than most travelers have ever seen.
Petroglyphs, Jaylyau & Sundown
- Morning Breakfast at camp. Slow start — no rush. The river is right there if anyone's brave enough for a cold-water wake-up.
- Mid-morning The petroglyphs gorge — over 3000 ancient carvings spanning thousands of years. We'll spend 2-4 hours exploring with commentary on the symbols, the cultures that made them, and what they tell us about the people who lived here.
- Lunch Lunch back at camp. A proper meal, time to rest, recharge. Refreshing dip in the river for those who want it — the cold water is genuinely exhilarating, especially after the morning hike.
- Afternoon Drive to jaylyau — traditional summer pastures in the foothills of Jungar Alatau. Meet local shepherds, see how they've lived for centuries. Drive there and back from the campsite, no hike required.
- Late afternoon Return to camp. Time to relax by the fire or the river before dinner.
- Evening Dinner around the campfire. Stories, conversation, food cooked over open flame.
- Sundown Short hike to a hill overlooking the valley — a few minutes from camp, but the view changes everything. Watch the sun set over the Jungar Alatau in complete silence. Back at camp before full dark.
Goodbye & Waterfall (Conditions Permitting)
- Morning Breakfast at camp. Pack up together. One last chance for a river dip before we leave.
- Late morning Short hike to say farewell to the valley.
- Midday Drive to Burkhan-Bulak waterfall — one of Kazakhstan's tallest, hard to reach without a guide. The dramatic finale of the expedition. Conditions-dependent: heavy rain, snowmelt, or road damage can make the approach unsafe. If we can't make the waterfall, we hike one of the gorges in the valley before driving out instead — equally beautiful, just different.
- Lunch Lunch back in Taldykorgan — your return to creature comforts: real coffee, comfortable seating, baristas who remember your order, and a chance to start processing what you just experienced.
- Evening Drive back to Almaty. Arrive early evening, tired and changed.
